Points are updated

Points are updated with final totals for Wednesday and Thursday Nights.  Just one more game to go for the season this Sunday and the points are all locked up.  I’ll make a sweep on all points to make sure there were no mistakes on entries, so be sure to look things over and let me know if there are any name misspellings or whatnot.  Everything will be finalized this Monday when we will announce the qualifiers list as well as start stack sizes.

Remember, for those who qualify, the Final Tournament will be Friday, July 15th at Mazzy’s Norcross 7:00pm sharp!

A new season starts next week… a fresh start, and your chance to be points leader!

How Points Accumulate

Happy Independence Day!

There is one week left in this season, that means you have one game at each location to improve your points.

Speaking of points, we often get questions around this time of the season about how points are calculated and used. I’ll attempt to answer that.

Every time you play a regular Posh Poker Tournament, the top 20 finishers are awarded points. Points range from 500 for first down to 40 points for 20th (Structure is documented on this website… just click the “tournament structure” link at the top). Points are also awarded if you make and showdown 4-of-a-kind (75pts), a straight flush (100pts), or a Royal Flush (150pts). Finally, at the end of the night you can put your total tab (what you spent that night) on the back of the sign-out sheet. This will earn you double points for the night. That means if you spent $15 (including tip), you would receive an additional 30pts for the evening. You get these regardless of whether you placed.

Over the course of 12 weeks (a regular Posh season), those points accumulate for each location. That is to say that if you make points at the Titled Kilt, they total only for the Tilted Kilt, and do not total towards the Doubletree. This gives you separate opportunities to make the final tournament, as the top 30* overall finishers of a given night are automatically given entry into the final tournament. Therefore if you can only play one night a week, and choose the same location each time, you can still make the tournament, and someone who plays multiple nights a week does not make it harder for you to earn entry.

In another post I will describe how starting chips for the final are determined, but for this post it is sufficient to describe how points are accumulated and used to determine who enters in the tournament.

You can look at points total by clicking the “Points Leaderboard” link at the top. Just change the “Season” drop down to the night you wish to view, and at the bottom you can change the “page” to view all placements. I hope this helps clear things up for some of our newer players.

* Top 30 generally actually means top 31. While Jeff usually plays the regular tournaments, and the final tournament, he cannot win the prizes and therefore takes himself out of the top 30 calculation. And since Jeff always makes top 30, the 31st finisher earns entry as well.

Updated Points

I’ve updated the points. Sorry that the Tilted Kilt scores were off, I had forgot to save my recent changes. Everything is up to date now!

Week 10 begins, which means you have 3 more weeks of play to bring your scores up and make it in into the season final tournament!

Word Search

You can earn an extra bonus for tonight’s game at Mazzy’s by completing the word search below. Find as many poker related words as you can. Find at least 20 words for a bonus, find all 32 and you’ll get a double bonus. (Click the image for a printable page). Good only at tonight’s (6/16/11) Mazzy’s game.

Edit: I think it would take too long to figure these out without help. Here are all of the possible words:
ALLIN, BETS, BLIND, BLUFF, BUBBLE, BUYIN, CARDS, CHIPS, CUTOFF, DEAL, FISH, FLOP, FLUSH, FOLD, FULLHOUSE, HEADSUP, HIGHCARD, HOUSE, JOKER, KICKER, MUCK, NOLIMIT, RAISE, RIFFLE, RIVER, ROCK, SHARK, SHUFFLE, STRAIGHT, SUCKOUT, TOURNAMENT, WILDCARD

Trivia results.

The answers to the trivia from last Friday are below. I got some interesting responses, many that were wrong, or were not what I was looking for, while those that submitted, insisted they were right. Anyone who made the attempt got credit.

1. As it turns out, there are a few different views as to what the suits of the cards represented. However, the most common and historically significant answer came from the French in the 15th century. The suits represented the different classes of people: Clergy (Hearts), Merchant/Working Class (Diamonds), The Peasants (Clubs), and the Nobility (Spades). While there are some other interpretations, including those of the tarot, this is the generally accepted representations.

2. Turns out that there are a lot of card games with 3 hole cards… however, the key phrase was “like hold ’em”. This means a “community card game” that has almost the exact same rules as hold ’em, except you get 3 hole cards dealt pre-flop instead of 2. The game is called Pineapple (or Crazy Pineapple), and works just like hold ’em except after the flop you must discard exactly 1 of your hole cards. Three card poker is not like hold ’em, and neither is any stud game (which gives you technically 3 hole cards), as they are not community games.

3. There are also different orders for suits, but the generally accpepted one in U.S. Poker (from highest to lowest): Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs. (If you refer back to question #1, it makes a bit more sense).

Thanks for playing!

PPS. For those of you who read entire emails and posts or check the website regularly… good for you! You never know what kind of bonus offer you’ll find if you are thorough! Case in point: Anyone who is a member of the Posh Poker facebook group, and posts to the group today, will get a bonus at the Doubletree game. If you are not a member, but request to join, that will serve as your bonus. If you are not a member of facebook, and have no desire to be, just tell me so at the game, and you’ll get the bonus as well. If you are on facebook, but are too lazy to join… I’ll be too lazy to hand you a chip 😉

Simply go to facebook, and search for Posh Poker to find and join the group.

POKER TRIVIA (bring me the answers tonight!, and hand them to me on a piece of paper — no verbal answers accepted).

* What do the suits of a standard deck of cards represent?
* What Poker Game, Like Texas-Hold ’em, features 3 hole cards instead of 2?
* In most poker games, the individual suits have no value over another. However, in certain situations in stud games, drawing for deal, etc… what ranking is used for suits (From High to Low)?

A long needed congratulations

This has been a long time coming, as I had been trying to gather some pictures from the final tournament. Seems everyone was too busy having fun, and didn’t take any pictures of the actual tournament itself. (There are some good pictures of Heath and Jen on facebook, however). Regardless, we’d like to congratulate the winners:

1. Jesse Littler
2. Jack Friedman
3. Monika Sachdeva
4. Patrick Dye

The final tournament and player appreciation party was a wild success. We’re looking forward to doing it again sometime in the future.

In the absence of party photos, please enjoy this photo of Clay’s dog, Skip, putting on his best poker face.
